Isopod FAQ – Tiny Bugs, Big Job!

Q: What are isopods, anyway?

A: Think of them as the janitors of your jungle. Isopods are little crustaceans that munch on dead stuff and keep your bioactive enclosure squeaky clean (well… as clean as dirt can be).

Q: Are isopods safe for my frogs or reptiles?

A: Totally! Most herps either ignore them or consider them a crunchy snack. They’re harmless and helpful all at once—like a bug-sized butler.

Q: What do they eat?

A: These guys aren’t picky. Leaf litter, mold, old veggies, fish flakes, reptile poo—you name it, they’ll chow down. Just no pizza. (We checked.)

Q: How many do I need to start a colony?

A: Start with 20–50 and let them do their thing. If your tank is cozy and moist, they’ll multiply on their own like a bug party that never ends.

Q: How do I keep them happy before putting them in the tank?

A: Just give them a little bin with damp substrate, some leaves or moss, and a snack. Keep it humid and dark—they’re not into the spotlight.

Q: Can I mix isopod species?

A: You can, but it’s like throwing two rival bands into one studio—it might get weird. Some species take over, so it’s best to let each one have their own stage.

Q: Do they need heat or lights?

A: Nope! If your enclosure’s comfy for frogs or geckos, it’s perfect for isopods too. Just keep it humid and cozy—no tanning lamps required.
